Aromachology is made up of “Aroma + chology” in which aroma means ’smells’ and chology means ‘behaviour of a person’ stating that according to the aroma, we can influence the mind of humans. It is the study of odours(smells) and different types of scents used by ancient humans as well as recent ones which can trigger the feelings of a human being between human to human. It is also used to relate the relationship between emotions and feelings. Those who work in aromachology are known as aromachologists. Aromachalogists keep analysing the feelings and emotions of humans which affect the limbic system of the brain. When we smell something, it goes to the olfactory bulb (part of the limbic system of the brain) in our brain. Different responses are gathered by the aromachologists, which will be further researched and analysed.

It was launched in 1980 as said by Sarah Sangha, co-founder of Vellum wellness , launched in 2019. Aromachology is totally based on scientific study , it mainly focuses on how fragrance can be impactful in dealing with human minds, behaviour, emotions. Sangha uses lemon oil as an example of scent which helps her to feel more relaxed and better in control of mind and then she decides to research aromachology.

How Does the Limbic System Function in Aromachology?

As we studied in biology, the limbic system is the part of our nervous system in which it is responsible for all the functioning of the nervous system of our body. In the limbic system, a rounded mass of tissue is present which we call an olfactory bulb which has several nerves inside it. Olfactory is responsible for sensing the smell around the human body, when there is any odour around the human body olfactory activates itself to sense that smell and sends the responses to the brain. It is a pathway which can connect numerous emotions and other physiological reactions that can occur during the activities performed by the human in his daily life.

The Limbic system aligns with the memory and emotions which helps in reducing the stress response of human beings. By using essence oil , the odiferous molecules enter the nose and reach the nasal cavity. When these molecules are pierced, it sends the signal to the olfactory bulb. These odour impulses are further sent to the limbic system.

Aromatherapy

In ancient times, people also used to do aromatherapy which provides psychological and physiological relaxation of the human body. It is a practice of sensing smell through essential oils which is used for mental and physical use of fragrance which is influencing the mind as well as body. Aromatherapy is the adverse of research and analysis, it is only used for healing purposes with the use of fragrance essential oils like Lavender oil and rosemary essential oil. The use of lavender can be more beneficial for people dealing with severe anxiety and depression but it is not the only one many more species can deal with that syndrome. Additionally, the use of rosemary essential oil can help in reducing the pain by relaxing the muscles, as it has pain-relieving properties, and acts as an anti-inflammatory.
