How Ylang-ylang Gets Extracted?

The essential oil of this flower gives an aromatic fragrance. By using a steam distillation process, essential oil is extracted. In this process, steam helps to extract the oil, in which a mixture of water and oil gets collected. The volatile component gets vaporized and then the remaining condensed form gets collected. Ylang-ylang essential oil is categorized into four grades: extra, first, second, and third. There are different kinds of essential oils which depend on their usage.

Higher concentrated oils are potent and also called ‘extra’. These are costly and mainly used in making perfumes or cosmetics. It contains geranyl acetate, linalool, and benzyl acetate.

With the duration of the distillation process, the amount of sesquiterpene (antimicrobial properties) hydrocarbons gets increased. So, mostly these act as middle notes in soaps, candles, etc.

After more than 20 hours in distillation, Ylang-ylang gives a ‘complete’ grade oil. It consists of a large amount of aromatic compounds such as germacrene and beta-caryophyllene. These components give floral, fruity, and deep aromas.
