Fragrance Tips

What Perfume Does Tate McRae Wear?

Long before the arena tours, Tate McRae was a competition dancer from Calgary. At 12 she was a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance, and she finished third in the show’s 2016 season, the best result a Canadian has had on the show. So what perfume does Tate McRae wear? As of October 2026 the main answer is her own: Tate 01 Eau de Parfum, which she launched this month and says she wears to rehearsals. She has also named YSL Libre Eau de Parfum as her go-to and Ariana Grande Cloud as her favourite pop-star scent.

That makes this one of the easier celebrity scent questions to answer, because the evidence comes from her own interviews and not from fan guesswork. What most coverage skips is the angle that matters for her: she’s a performer who sweats under stage lights, and the way she talks about fragrance always comes back to movement and to how a scent sits on skin. This guide sticks to that. You’ll get what she has actually said she wears, why some perfumes hold up through a long show and others fade, a table comparing application methods, and picks for rehearsal, stage and after-show nights. Inspired picks are labelled as inspired, so you always know which is which.

The call sheet, in brief:

  • Tate 01 (her own brand, launched October 2026): self-confirmed, worn to rehearsals.
  • YSL Libre Eau de Parfum: self-confirmed as her go-to in a 2024 interview.
  • Ariana Grande Cloud: self-confirmed as her top pick among pop-star fragrances in 2026.
  • Fan claims: we didn’t find any consistent fan-reported scent that goes beyond these three.

What perfume does Tate McRae wear? The documented scents

So, what perfume does Tate McRae wear, and how sure can you be? Below, each fragrance starts with its evidence level, so you can decide how much weight to give it. One thing to keep in mind with all celebrity scent questions: a perfume someone sells or represents is a commercial relationship, while a perfume they bring up unprompted is a personal preference. Tate’s list has one of each kind, so the labels matter.

Tate 01 Eau de Parfum (Tate By Tate McRae)

Evidence level: confirmed. It’s her own product, so there’s a commercial interest. Tate 01 is the first fragrance from Tate By Tate McRae, a brand she created with Scent Beauty. The launch was announced on 1 October 2026. It went on sale first through the brand’s own site, then on Ulta.com from 16 October and in Ulta stores across the US from 25 October, according to Cosmetics Business. There were early signs of this. In August 2026 trade press reported a trademark filing for “Tate By Tate McRae” that listed fragrances alongside skincare, body mists and candles.

The scent was made by Givaudan perfumers Adriana Medina and Antoine Maisondieu. It’s sold as a floral-woody “second-skin” fragrance built around Iso E Super, a smooth, cedar-like synthetic that many people find smells a little different on each person. The official description opens with bergamot and clary sage, moves into white florals, and settles on amber, tonka bean and sandalwood. In her interview with Who What Wear, the notes are given a bit differently: orange flower, hedione (a bright, airy jasmine-type molecule), moss and tonka. The two lists fit together, since orange flower is a white floral, but they show that brand copy and interview copy rarely list notes in exactly the same way. If you want to understand how top, heart and base notes relate, our guide to reading a fragrance pyramid explains it.

Why this matters for a performance guide: in the launch announcement, she says she wears it during rehearsals because “the scent warms up and moves with my body.” She also told Who What Wear she expected to end up with a vanilla, but the final formula went somewhere fresher and woodier. Sizes run from a 10ml travel spray up to 100ml, and a hair and body spray is also sold. That puts the smallest bottle in the budget tier and the full bottle in the mid-range.

Early reviews are positive. A reviewer at Elite Daily found that it lasted for hours and dried down softer and cleaner than its bright floral opening. She was less keen on the heavy, plain bottle. Since it’s her own product, read her enthusiasm the way you’d read any founder’s: it’s sincere, but it’s also selling something.

YSL Libre Eau de Parfum

Evidence level: confirmed by her, with no ambassador deal that we could find. In a 2024 beauty-routine feature, Bustle asked about her signature scent and she answered, “I usually use YSL Libre — that’s my go-to.” This is the strongest personal preference on the list, because she brought up a brand she doesn’t represent. The face of Libre is a different pop star, as our post on what perfume Dua Lipa wears explains.

Libre launched in 2019 and was made by Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaim. The note list published by retailer Escentual starts with mandarin, petitgrain, lavandin and blackcurrant. The heart is lavender, two kinds of jasmine and orange flower absolute, and the base is Madagascan vanilla, cedarwood, an ambergris accord and white musk. It’s a white floral with a herbal, lavender backbone: polished and confident, but not sugary. Notice the overlap with Tate 01. Both have orange flower in the heart and a clean, woody-ambery base. That suggests she likes a particular style, and Tate 01 reads like her own take on it.

One caveat: the interview is from mid-2024. It tells you what she reached for then, not necessarily what’s on her vanity now that she has her own scent.

Ariana Grande Cloud

Evidence level: confirmed by her, but as a ranking, not as a daily signature. In the October 2026 Who What Wear interview, she named Cloud as her number one pop-girl fragrance. That puts it at the top of the celebrity scents she rates. It doesn’t prove she wears it every day, so treat it as a favourite rather than a signature.

Cloud came out in 2018. At launch, trade press described it as opening with lavender blossom, pear and bergamot, with a heart of coconut cream, praline and vanilla orchid, and musks and woods underneath. It’s soft, sweet and fluffy, more dessert than Libre, and it’s one of the best-known affordable pop-star scents. Brand deals that aren’t fragrance deals

You may see her name linked to other beauty brands, so here’s the background. She became a global ambassador for Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost skincare line in early 2025, and earlier she had partnerships with Maybelline and Capezio dancewear. None of these is a perfume deal. They don’t tell you anything about how she smells, and we haven’t treated them as if they did.

What fans claim

We searched for fan theories and recurring “Tate wears X” claims. Nothing we found was consistent or well sourced enough to report beyond the three scents above. Since she has spoken about fragrance on the record, the honest answer is to go with what she said and not repeat rumours.

Built to survive a two-hour show: what makes a scent sweat-proof

“Sweat-proof” is a marketing word. Nothing is truly sweat-proof. But some fragrances hold up much better through heat, movement and hours of wear, and the reasons are easy to understand. They come down to three things: how concentrated the perfume is, what its base is made of, and how you prepare your skin.

Concentration: how much scent is in the bottle

A fragrance is aromatic oils dissolved in alcohol. The labels tell you roughly how much oil there is. Eau de cologne and eau de toilette have the least, eau de parfum has more, and extrait or parfum has the most. More oil generally means the scent lasts longer and stays on skin after the alcohol evaporates. All three of Tate’s documented scents are eau de parfum, which is a sensible middle ground for a performer: it lasts through a long day without filling the room. Our explainer on eau de toilette vs eau de parfum covers the labels in more detail.

Sweat complicates this. Heat makes fragrance evaporate faster, so a warm, moving body actually projects scent more strongly at first. That’s why Tate’s comment about Tate 01 “warming up” on her body during rehearsal is accurate chemistry, not just marketing. The downside is that faster evaporation means the scent is used up sooner. A heavier concentration gives you more to work with.

Base notes: the part that stays

Every perfume is a set of molecules that evaporate at different speeds. Citrus and herbs, like bergamot or clary sage in Tate 01, are small and light, so they’re gone within the first half hour. Florals in the heart last a few hours. Woods, amber, tonka, vanilla and musks are large, heavy molecules that can stay on skin through a full show and the drive home.

So if you want a scent that’s still there at the encore, look at the base. Both Tate 01 and Libre have solid woody-ambery foundations. Cloud’s musky, sweet base also lasts well. A perfume built mainly on fresh citrus or aquatic notes, however lovely, will usually fade long before a show ends.

Skin-scent molecules like Iso E Super and ambroxan work a little differently. They tend to sit close to the skin and come and go: you smell them, stop noticing, then catch them again when you move or warm up. On a dancer, that coming and going can be a plus.

Skin prep: give the fragrance something to hold on to

Dry skin loses fragrance quickly, because the oils have nothing to bind to and evaporate along with the alcohol. Moisturised skin holds scent noticeably longer. Unscented lotion works, and a matching scented body cream works even better. Tate grew up in Calgary, which she has jokingly called one of the driest places on earth, so moisturising first probably comes naturally to her. For more techniques, see our guide on how to make perfume stay longer.

Two more tips that matter for anyone who moves a lot. First, don’t spray where you sweat most heavily, because sweat dilutes the scent and washes it off. Collarbones, the back of the neck and the inner elbows often do better than wrists that you keep wiping on a towel. Second, don’t rub your wrists together after spraying. It doesn’t destroy the perfume, but it speeds up evaporation of the top notes. Our guide on where to spray perfume shows the placements.

The longevity lab: application methods compared

Here’s how the common methods compare for someone who needs a scent to last through movement, heat and costume changes. No method suits everyone. Choose based on your skin, your clothes and how much you want people to notice.

MethodHowLasts longer becauseDownside
Moisturise firstApply unscented lotion or a light body oil, wait a minute, then spray. The oils in the perfume bond to the moisturiser instead of evaporating off dry skin.Heavy, greasy oils can make the scent smell flatter; use a thin layer.
Layer matching body productsUse a body wash, lotion or mist from the same scent line, then spray the perfume on top. Each layer adds more of the same base notes, so the scent fades more slowly.Costs more, and it’s easy to overdo the strength.
Spray on hair or a hair mistMist the ends of your hair from a distance, or use a dedicated hair perfume.Hair fibres are porous and hold fragrance well, and every head turn releases it.Alcohol-heavy perfume can dry hair over time; hair mists are gentler.
Spray on fabricLightly spray a scarf, jacket lining or the inside of a hoodie.Fabric doesn’t heat up like skin, so the scent evaporates slowly and lasts for days.It can stain silk and pale fabrics, and you lose the warmth of the scent on skin.
Spray low-sweat zonesTarget collarbones, back of the neck and behind the knees instead of wrists.Less sweat and less wiping mean the fragrance isn’t diluted or rubbed off.You smell it less yourself than you would on your wrists.
Touch up from a mini or rollerballKeep a 10ml travel spray or roll-on in your bag and reapply at a break.A fresh layer restarts the scent instead of making the first one last longer. It’s easy to over-apply if you can no longer smell your own perfume.
Balm under the sprayDab a tiny amount of unscented balm on pulse points, then spray over it.The waxy layer slows evaporation of the fragrance oils.It feels slick and transfers onto clothes and costumes.

The method that works best for performers is the touch-up mini, because it doesn’t fight the heat, it just tops you up afterwards. Tate 01’s 10ml size is designed for exactly that. Our guide to hair perfumes covers the hair-mist approach in more detail.

Rehearsal, stage, after-party

Knowing the answer to what perfume does Tate McRae wear is only half of it; knowing when to wear what is the useful part. A dancer’s day has very different stages, and the right scent for each one is different too. For each scenario below, we start with the scent that her own comments support, then add clearly labelled inspired picks that are not taken from her routine.

Rehearsal: close to the skin and moving with you

Documented pick: Tate 01. This is the one place where she has said directly when she wears a scent. Rehearsal studios are small, warm spaces shared with other people, so a woody skin scent that warms up with your body is the polite choice, compared with a big floral that fills the room. One or two sprays on the collarbones is plenty.

Inspired picks (not hers): If you want a similar close, woody effect from an established brand, Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 is pure Iso E Super, the same molecule Tate 01 is built around. Wearing it alone shows you what that “second-skin” effect is like before you buy the full blend. Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume works in a similar way, using ambroxan for a clean, slightly mineral warmth. Both come and go during the day, which suits a session full of stops and starts.

Stage: bigger, warmer, still there at the encore

Documented pick, with a caveat: YSL Libre Eau de Parfum. She called it her go-to in 2024 but didn’t say she wears it on stage specifically. We’re pairing it with this scenario because of how it’s built: the lavender gives it structure, the jasmine and orange flower give it presence, and the vanilla, ambergris and musk base lasts through heat. If you’re performing yourself, in a school show, at a dance competition or at a wedding speech, this is the kind of fragrance that’s still noticeable after a costume change.

Inspired picks (not hers): Other warm, confident white florals in the same mood include Libre’s own stronger versions, which YSL makes in several concentrations. Mugler Alien is another, with a famously long-lasting jasmine-amber character that’s built for big nights. Our list of long-lasting perfumes for women has more options that survive a long evening. Apply before you dress, so your costume or outfit picks up a little of the scent too.

After-party: softer, sweeter, made for winding down

Documented pick, as a favourite: Ariana Grande Cloud. The coconut-praline softness and musky base suit the late-night part of the evening, after the adrenaline wears off. It’s also on the shelf of nearly every pop fan, so you’ll be in good company.

Inspired picks (not hers): If you want something that bridges Tate 01’s woodiness and Cloud’s sweetness, try layering. A spray of a plain skin-scent molecule under a sweet gourmand makes the sweetness feel more grown-up. A light vanilla body mist over a woody perfume does the reverse. She mentioned that she nearly went the vanilla route herself, and our guide to the best vanilla perfumes lists the ones worth trying.

Tate McRae perfume picks for teens and young fans

A lot of Tate’s audience is still in school, so this section is about what works for them, both age-appropriate and affordable. A good first perfume for a teenager is lighter, inexpensive, easy to wear to class, and something a parent won’t object to finding on the bathroom shelf. That rules out the heavy, smoky evening scents and leaves plenty of good options.

  • Tate 01, 10ml travel size ($). This is the most direct way to smell like her, and the small bottle keeps the cost in the budget tier. The fresh, woody style is subtle enough for school.
  • Ariana Grande Cloud ($–$$). Her favourite pop-star scent, often available in small sizes and gift sets. It’s sweet but gentle, and it’s an easy one to wear.
  • Tate 01 hair and body spray ($). Lighter than the perfume, made for spraying generously, and fine after PE or dance class.
  • Body mists in general ($). For younger fans especially, a mist is a sensible first step. It’s lower in strength, cheaper, and hard to overdo.

Parents should know that the biggest risk with teens isn’t the choice of scent but the amount. Two sprays of an eau de parfum is enough for a full school day, and five is a cloud that classmates will notice. A mini bottle naturally limits how much gets used. Our guides to the best perfumes for teenage girls and the best fragrances for Gen Z list more age-appropriate picks.

For a young dancer in particular, the performance tips earlier in this guide still apply, at a smaller scale. Moisturise first, spray the collarbones instead of the wrists, and keep a mini in the dance bag. The studio, and the parent driving you home, will appreciate it.

Picking a present for a Tate fan

The obvious gift is the one she made, and for a big fan it’s a good choice. Tate 01 is new enough in October 2026 that many fans won’t have it yet. The travel size makes a good stocking filler, and the full bottle works as a main present. Libre is the more sophisticated option for an older fan who wants a scent with a long track record, and Cloud is the safe crowd-pleaser for younger fans.

A few practical tips. First, buy from authorised retailers. A popular new celebrity launch attracts fakes, and our guide on how to spot fake perfume shows what to check. Second, if you’re unsure what they’ll like, a set of minis is safer than one big bottle. Third, include a gift receipt. Even a well-chosen fragrance can turn sour on a particular person’s skin.

If you’d rather pick from a wider range of crowd-pleasing scents, browse the giftexo shop for fragrances in the fresh-floral, woody and soft-gourmand styles her favourites cover.

Backstage questions, answered

Does Tate McRae have her own perfume?

Yes. Tate 01 Eau de Parfum is the first fragrance from her brand Tate By Tate McRae, made with Scent Beauty. It was announced on 1 October 2026, then sold through her brand’s website and from mid-October at Ulta, online and in stores. Givaudan perfumers Adriana Medina and Antoine Maisondieu created the floral-woody scent, and sizes run from a 10ml travel spray to a 100ml bottle.

What is Tate McRae’s signature scent?

Now that she has her own fragrance, Tate 01 is the scent she’s actively linked to and the one she says she wears to rehearsals. Before it launched, she called YSL Libre Eau de Parfum her go-to in a 2024 interview. The two have a lot in common: orange flower in the heart, a clean woody-amber base, and a confident rather than sugary style.

What does Tate 01 smell like?

It opens bright with bergamot and herbal clary sage, then becomes softly floral with orange flower and other white florals, and finally dries down to warm woods, amber, tonka and a hint of moss. Iso E Super gives it a skin-like, coming-and-going quality. Early reviewers describe it as fresh and floral at first, then softer and cleaner as it wears.

Is Tate McRae a brand ambassador for any perfume?

Not for any other company that we could find. Her fragrance connection is her own brand, Tate By Tate McRae, which carries an obvious commercial interest. Her other beauty deals, including Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost skincare line, are skincare and makeup, not fragrance. Her comments about YSL Libre and Ariana Grande Cloud were personal preferences, not paid endorsements, as far as published sources show.

Is Tate 01 a good perfume for teenagers?

It can be, especially the 10ml travel size or the hair and body spray, which keep the cost in the budget tier. The fresh, woody style isn’t heavy or overtly sensual, so it suits school and daytime. One or two sprays is enough; younger fans may prefer the lighter mist.

How do I make perfume last through a dance class or show?

Moisturise first, then spray low-sweat areas like the collarbones and back of the neck rather than your wrists. Choose an eau de parfum with a woody, amber or musky base, since those notes last longest. Spray a little on your hair or a jacket, and keep a mini in your bag to top up afterwards.
